Grand Daddy Purple Origin and Genetics
Grand Daddy Purple seeds were first released in 2003 by Ken Estes in the Bay Area. The origins of Grand Daddy Purple go back to the seventies when Afghani seeds started showing up in Northern California. Over the years, some of the most revered purple strains were developed from those Afghans, including the legendary Purple Urkle. Ken Estes combined the Purple Urkle genetics with Big Bud, subsequently backcrossing it to produce Grand Daddy Purple. The plants showed higher yields than the Purple Urkle while still gaining a dark purple color scheme. Grand Daddy Purple won first place Best US Indica at the 2015 Denver High Times Cannabis Cup. The strain continues to reign supreme in marijuana markets across the globe.

GDP!!!💜 I’m in love with these genetics. Probably the dankest weed plants I’ve grown to date. Nice and uniform crop, bushy and dense like an indica. Fast to flower and impeccable bud quality. And the high hits like a brick!
Dustin H. –
This weed is something else. I’ve never seen such dank buds on a plant before, granted I’ve only grown a few strains so far. But GDP takes the cake. These plants grow short and stocky with dense, heavyweight nuggets. Late into flowering I saw the purple colors come out, such a joy to behold. It looks and smokes so good, hard to find better weed than this right here!
Frankie R. –
Incredible strain. This granddaddy purp hits different! The colors are mind blowing – hues of deep purple, green, and fiery orange crystals. A beauty to cultivate and even more to smoke! The grape and berry aroma is so intoxicating it’s unreal. The stoney high gradually builds to release your day’s stress and it’s super effective for pain relief too. Crazy yield. Didn’t believe until I grew it. Quality genetics from these seeds. Hypnotic purps — it’s an investment, worth every penny. Easy grow, nice pull, steadies the mood – what more could you want?!
Eric G. –
5/5 seeds germinated. Plants responded well to everything I did. Buds came on everywhere like wildfire. Ended up turning real purple near harvest time. Came out A+ all around. No joke some crazy colors and phenomenal smell/taste/high. Gotta buy some more seeds stat!

Absolutely stellar strain! I’ve grown a few different strains before, but GDP takes the cake. The buds are dense, sticky, and absolutely gorgeous – a true sight to behold. The taste is sweet and fruity, and the high is potent and long-lasting. Plus, growing them was a breeze. Anyone looking for a top-notch indica strain to grow should give GDP a try!
Tom W. –
GDP has to be one of the best strains out there. Not only is it a breeze to grow, it also produces some of the tastiest and most marketable buds imaginable! The smell is strong and sweet, and the high is awesome. I’ve been growing for a few years now, and I can honestly say that this strain is the best I’ve ever tried.
Josh T. –
I have grown many different strains over the years, but this one is by far one of my favorites. The GDP seeds I purchased have produced some of the dankest and most beautiful buds I’ve ever seen! The smell and taste are amazing, and the high I get from smoking it is on a whole different level. Growing this strain was easy and the yields were generous. I would highly recommend these seeds to anyone who is looking for top-notch purple buds!
Dave L. –
This is by far my favorite indoor strain and I get the best results from it. I will be purchasing these again soon as they are some of the best buds I have grown.
Roman –
Grew Ken’s GDP outdoors, easy to grow and very forgiving to any mistakes you make. Not much care or maintenance needed other than watering and feeding, which I took care of and just let these lovely gals do their thing. Great looking heavy buds, very dense and resinous. Smacking body buzz with a very strong taste. Just put me on a weed binge!
Harry P. –
These GDP seeds were awesome! I had 5 of them grow out well and ended up with the best purple buds around.
Darren R. –
These grew really well in my backyard. There is so much resin on these buds, they’re big and purple, and the taste is out of this world. Very smooth buzz and intense smell. Definitely a great smoke, would buy again.

This plant is one of the easiest purple strains I have ever grown and it has a very strong stank, it’s very aromatic. You don’t have to spend a lot of money or effort to get a top quality harvest with this strain and it’s quick to mature.
Noel B. –
Absolutely loved this strain. Very easy to work with and very appealing high yielder. The buds were purple, fat and frosty. Really strong buzz too, almost overwhelming. By far the easiest plant I’ve grown, highly recommend this one!
Craig M. –
Nice plants they were easy to grow and responded well to topping. Ended up with a bush that turned completely purple and packed with sugary sweet dense buds. Everything I hoped for and more!
Ronnie –
The GDP seeds were just what I was looking for! Very easy growing from the get go and when flowering came the bud sites developed everywhere. Great looking buds, loads of resin, and they finished a nice purple color. Harvest went great and sampling the final product was a treat. I couldn’t be more pleased with the results and I intend to grow a bunch more.
Taylor N. –
This is up with the best weed out there and by far my personal favorite. Grow very easy, no special care or maintenance needed. Just grows fast and compact.
Anonymous –
Wow, what a strain! My first time growing outdoors and these little guys grew so well and in such a short time. I got lots of buds and my harvest was awesome! The buds were heavy, frosty and extremely rich in color. These definitely make for a nice high! Definitely growing more next year!
Chad H. –
I’ve been growing for a few years now and I have to say that this weed is the best stuff I’ve ever grown. Very frosty purple nugs, very sweet and potent smoke. Everything about this strain is great.
Isaac C. –
This strain is very nice to work with. Very frosty, purple, dense buds that smell and taste amazing. Super high, this one is good. Perfect for showing off, plus it’s super easy to grow!
Ringo –
GDP absolutely blew me away!!! Best purple weed I’ve grown hands down!!!
Nick A. –
Grew GDP indoors and got some really nice stoney purps out of it. Very pleased with how they finished. The yield was very respectable and the smoke is super tasty.
Owen M. –
I did a pack of these indoors and it was a very fun grow. All five seeds popped and grew very bushy and the buds were quite a sight to behold. Gave me a great yield too. Excellent smoke, it’s very strong in flavor and potency.
Sebastian –
The strain is pure quality. I grew 5 of these indoors and each one had a great yield with beautiful purple flowers. The high is extremely pleasurable and fast acting. I would definitely grow this again, it was the best grow I’ve ever done.
Grady N. –
The best seeds I have ever grown, with strong growth and buds so damn beautiful you stare at them for hours.
Ada R. –
I really enjoyed growing these weed seeds. The harvest at the end was breathtaking and I’m absolutely loving these cured buds. This strain is really easy to grow and even if you’re a beginner, you can still get a good harvest.
Chappie –
Grew these babies indoors with a mars hydro ts 1000 light. The yield was insane and the smoke is pretty powerful. I make pretty good money selling these buds because of how good they are. Everyone I’ve given them to loves them and comes back for more.
Jacob T. –
I’ve grown this strain a few times now and it is probably my favorite strain out there. Granted I haven’t tried them all, but I have tried a lot.
Billy J. –
Easy and fun to grow. The buds have a very sweet distinguishable taste and smell almost immediately after flowering starts. It’s just really good weed!
Norm –
Still got a little more growing to do before I chop mine down but the buds are already pretty big and purple. Wow! Am going to sell this batch but might just have to keep some for my personal stash.
Andy M. –
Probably my favorite purple strain of all time. The buds on GDP are bigger and denser than other purple strains and it has a pretty strong stone as well.
Tara W. –
I would definitely rate this strain as the #1 best I’ve tried growing so far. I got them as fem seeds and they all grew bulky plants with indica traits… which made some of the dankest flowers I’ve ever seen!
Wayne B. –
Top grade strain! Was well worth the price spent on seeds and growing was easy too. Has great bag appeal, colors, aromas and tastes with a very strong high. Will definitely be ordering more soon.
Keith C. –
Five fat beautiful stars! These GDP seeds grew into the best cannabis plants I have grown yet!
PJL –
Grew good for me I got a lot of top grade buds from this one and they were all purped out gas to the max. Super stoney and tastes so fine just want to smoke it up pronto!!
Holly M. –
This strain is very easy to grow and forgiving on beginner gardeners. She grows short and stout with smaller tight buds but has a very nice high with great strength to it. Great for pain relief and relaxation as well.
Kyle O. –
By far the best looking and tasting bud I have ever grown. No issues at all besides the fact I ran out of seeds before I could plant more. LOL
Sammy B. –
An excellent weed strain with the right look, smell, and flavor. GDP is a bit more hard to grow than most due to the fact that it likes lots of light, nutes, and water, and grows slowly at first, but once established it’s very rewarding. You won’t be disappointed with the buds!
Brendan W. –
Just started growing the Grand Daddy Purps and so far it’s been an excellent choice! I got the strain from a buddy of mine who bought a 10-pack of female seeds online and gave me 3 of them. My 3 seeds all came up so I’m thrilled. The plant growth has been quick and they seem to eat up all the light and nutrients I give to them. If they come out like the GDP I’ve seen I’ll be very happy.
Randall P. –
You can’t go wrong with GDP. The plants are simple to grow, take well to anything you throw at them, and stack on chronic buds in a league of their own. It has the stickiness, density, colors and juicy terps – what else could you ask for? Buy these seeds if you’re beginner or even an expert, you won’t regret it!
John D. –
📈🚀 This stuff is off the charts! I had been growing other indicas and hybrids, but I finally found what I think is the perfect strain for me. My first 3 Grand Daddy Purples were grown from seeds inside under LEDs, and they were deep green and healthy all the way from start to finish. Flowering time was the standard 2 months, just wait and you will be blown away once you see these plants bud out… and it’s got the stank!
Tracy F. –
These seeds are some of the best we’ve ever grown in terms of finished product. The plants are typical indica dominant… tight nodes and low to the ground. Stretched about 2x during flower cycle, all remained chunky throughout. It’s worth noting the purple color fades in as harvest approaches, and colder temps will accelerate the change.
Daniel M. –
This strain is amazing. I’ve never seen anything like it. I’m gonna be growing this strain for years to come. Great taste, great effects, great bud quality! Highly recommended!!!
Hunter –
I only give 5 stars to the best of the best. These genetics are fantastic. It is by far the best crop I have ever grown. The buds are out of this world. Mixed head and body high. Excellent for pain and nausea relief. This is my go to strain.
Mary A. –
GDP was one of the first strains I grew and is still one of my favorites. It grows really well, has a good yield of awesome weed, and the smoke is very enjoyable. If you haven’t grown or smoked this strain I recommend trying it out!
Doug K. –
I grew GDP outdoors in Mass this year and it lived up to all its claims. It grew very well in the rocky, sandy soil and was very easy to grow. It was ready to harvest after the first week of October so it’s not a very long-flowering plant.
The buds are covered in sticky trichomes and have a sweet, fruit flavor when smoked. The high is very powerful, making you feel like you’re floating–you almost feel drunk in a pleasant way. If you have trouble sleeping, this is a good strain for that–I fall asleep very quickly when I smoke.
Eric H. –
Just harvested my Granddaddy Purps and I have to say it’s definitely A grade bud. All in all a worthwhile grow, it’s not too stretchy so pretty simple to top or fim to shape it how you like. It flowers quickly and has a very nice sweet smell during the entire flowering period. The yield was high for me, I actually got more than I expected and they got a super resiny trichome coating. Very good hardy plants for novice growers or people who don’t have a lot of time to take care of them.
Jeffrey B. –
GDP is a great cultivar for all growers, from novices to masters! Definitely recommend this strain if you’re looking for something different than your average indica dominant hybrid. Very easy to grow and get high end yields. Buds are dense and stink to high heaven when matured. Very relaxing yet stimulating high at the same time.
Jared C. –
DANK!! Super strong smelling frosted buds. No mold problems growing outdoors in Hawaii! I got over a pound dry weight from 4 plants in 10 gallon pots. I supplemented extra lighting at the beginning after dark, it helped speed them up.
Sean –
I have this strain, its a heavy hitter. I love GDP its so good. THe smell is so fruity and sweet smelling when its growing. Smells like grape bubblegum almost. My yield wasnt to great but the quality made up for it.
Matt B. –
So far so good. I just got my packet of seeds today and I can’t wait to grow these babies out. I will be back on in a month or so to give everyone an update on how they are doing but as of right now I am very happy with this purchase!
Mr. Green –
I’ve grown Ken’s GDP, it’s dank for sure. They won’t yield as high as other strains but the quality is 💯
Kevin C. –
I bought these this Spring and grew them outdoors in kiddie pools filled with half FoxFarm Ocean Forest soil, a quarter perlite and a quarter mix of coco coir/compost. Then I added the works as far as organic nutrients go: blood meal, bone meal, chicken manure, greensand, etc. The seedlings were started under lights and sent outside once they got about 3 feet tall. They finished in mid August. The plants yielded 20 to 30 oz’s each of top shelf quality dank. The GDPs did grow a bit slower however but made up for it in tight internoding and bushiness. The buds are unreal… dripping in THC… very aromatic. As for the high, I felt a nice relaxed feeling and a little bit sedated. I would definitely buy again… but this time give the plants a very long, dedicated veg cycle with tons of lighting.
