Growing Information - Turnips

Sowing Indoors-Not recommended.
Sowing Outdoors-Direct sow from the time of your last frost date through mid summer. Sow into furrows, 1/2 inch deep. Keep seed beds moist.
Growing Tips-Make sure to thin to 3-8 inches between plants to allow for optimum root growth.
Fertilization Tips-Turnips prefer a pH of 5.5-6.8. Apply 1 cup of a blended organic fertilizer per 10 row feet to provide the nutrition necessary for optimum growth.
Insect Prevention Tips-Cover the rows with floating row cover or insect barrier to reduce root maggot and flea beetle populations.
Harvesting Tips-Roots are best if eaten before they reach the size of a baseball. Best stored at 33°F and 90-95% relative humidity.
Seed Specs-Approximately 325-400 seeds per gram. Minimum germination standard: 80%. Usual seed life: 3 years.
Seed Saving Tips-Turnips are biennial crops that produce seed the second season. In mild areas, they can be overwintered, but in severe winter areas, the root-to-seed method of production is required. Roots are dug, sorted in moist peat and sand, and replanted late winter when no more severe frosts are expected. Crops are insect pollinated and will cross-pollinate with other rutabagas, turnips, turnip oil rape, fodder turnips, winter rape, and kale rape. The recommended isolation distance for turnips is 1 mile.
