Growing Information - Spinach
Sowing Indoors-Not recommended.
Sowing Outdoors-Where winters are mild, direct sow as early as 2 1/2 months before your average last frost date. Spring sown varieties can be planted until the time of last frost. At that time, plant summer sown varieties through mid summer. At the end of summer, plant fall harvested varieties. Growing Tips-Most spinach does best in cooler weather, however summer sown varieties are more resistant to bolting. Fertilization Tips-A soil pH between 6.0-6.8 is optimum. Provide extra nitrogen to help stimulate microbial life that is usually lethargic in colder weather. In spring, use blood meal or other high nitrogen fertilizer banded beside the plants to give them a boost. Seed Specs-Turnips: Approximately 80 seeds per gram. Minimum germination standard: 65%. Usual seed life: 1 year. Seed Saving Tips-Spinach is mainly wind pollinated. Isolation of 1 mile is recommended for seed savers; however, commercial growers will keep a distance of 5-10 miles because spinach seed is very light and can readily ride the wind. These distances are not practical for the normal seed saver.
