Growing Information - Radishes
Sowing Indoors-Not recommended.
Sowing Outdoors-Direct sow from March through August. The season may be extended from February through September by sowing radishes in cold frames, cloches, or greenhouses. It is essential to thin promptly after seedlings have emerged. Growing Tips-Radishes are of highest quality when growing conditions are cool. Sow seeds every 10 days for a continual harvest. Radishes have very shallow root systems so make sure to water frequently. Fertilization Tips-Radishes prefer a pH between 5.5-6.8. Apply compost into the top 2-3 inches of soil to greatly improve performance and yield. Insect Prevention Tips-Flea beetle damage (pinholes in leaves) can reduce growth rate and thus reduce quality of the radishes. Control heavy infestations with spray applications of certified organic Pyrethrin or use a floating row cover. Seed Specs-Approximately 80 seeds per gram. Minimum germination standard: 80%. Usual seed life: 4 years. Seed Saving Tips-Radishes are bee and insect pollinated and will readily cross with other commercial or wild types. Isolate radish varieties by 1/2 mile to ensure purity.
