Growing Information - Peas

Sowing Indoors-Not recommended.
Sowing Outdoors-Direct sow when soil temperatures reach at least 50°F. Peas may be sown without tilling by scratching out a furrow and covering the seed shallowly.
Growing Tips-Do not thin peas, as they grow much better in thick stands. Climbing varieties must be sown along a fence or trellis.
Fertilization Tips-Apply 5-10 pounds of bone meal per 100 feet of furrow or 100 square feet of raised bed to provide the nutrition necessary for optimum production.
Disease Prevention Tips-A common pea disease, enation, can be very detrimental, especially in the maritime Northwest. Choose enation-resistant varieties or plant non-enation resistant varieties before mid-March.
Seed Specs-Approximately 90-165 seeds per ounce. Minimum germination standard: 80%. Usual seed life: 2 years.
Seed Saving Tip-Pea flowers are perfect and self-pollinating. It's generally accepted that pea flowers pollinate before they open so isolation is not required in the garden. Commercial producers generally require 50 feet of isolation mainly to prevent admixture during harvest.
