Growing Information - Melons
Sowing Indoors-Start seeds 3 weeks before your last frost date. Make sure to transplant into the garden bed before the taproot emerges out of the bottom of the pot.
Sowing Outdoors-Direct sow as long as soil temperature is above 65°F. Growing Tips-We have found that planting in raised beds and using green mulch film will help ripen even the largest melon a full 2 weeks early. Consistent moisture levels are necessary to avoid rotting. Soil should be barely moist to the touch. Fertilization Tips-Melons prefer a pH between 6.0-6.8. Apply 1/2 cup of a blended organic fertilizer around each plant to provide the nutrition necessary for optimum production. Disease Prevention Tips-Melons are susceptible to bacterial wilt and powdery mildew. Select disease resistant varieties and avoid overhead watering. Seed Specs-Approximately 20-40 seeds per gram. Minimum germination standard: 80%. Usual seed life: 3 years. Seed Saving Tips-Melons need insects and bees for pollination and they are outbreeding plants. All C. melo are cross-compatible. C. lanatus are also cross-compatible. Isolate 1/2 mile between varieties for seed purity.
