Growing Information - Leeks
Sowing Indoors-Start seeds 2-3 months before your last frost date and transplant out around the time of your average last frost date.
Sowing Outdoors-Direct sow into a rich, well-drained garden soil after the danger of frost has passed. Germination can be increased by as much as 20% with a moist seed bed. Growing Tips-When using transplants, plant in the bottom of a 5 inch deep trench and fill in around the plants as they grow. This blanches the bottom few inches of the stalk. Fertilization Tips-Leeks tolerate a slightly acidic soil and a pH between 6.0-6.8. Before transplanting or seeding, apply 1/4-1/2 cup of a blended organic fertilizer per 5 row feet into the soil, 1-2 inches below the transplant or seed. Harvesting Tips-Dig up anytime the leeks are 1/2 inch in diameter or larger. Store at 33°F and 65% relative humidity. Seed Specs-Approximately 350 seeds per gram. Minimum germination standard: 70%. Usual seed life: 1 year. Seed Saving Tips-Leeks are biennials and normal flowering occurs in the second year. Plants remain in the ground overwinter. Isolation between leek varieties should be 1 mile. Leeks will not cross with onions.
