Growing Information - Kohlrabi
Sowing Indoors-Start seeds 6 weeks before your last frost date. Transplant out at 6 weeks or when there are 6-8 true leaves and nighttime temperature are above 30°F.
Sowing Outdoors-For spring planting, sow the seed about 1 month before your average last frost date. For fall harvest, sow in late July-mid August. Growing Tips-Kohlrabi is a frost-tolerant plant that tends to be of better quality when harvested in the fall. Fertilization Tips-Kohlrabi prefers a pH of 6.5. Apply 1 cup of a blended organic fertilizer per 10 row feet either below the seeds or around the plants to provide the nutrition necessary for optimum growth. Harvesting Tips-It is very important to harvest spring-sown kohlrabi when they are small. To obtain tender, sweet kohlrabi, pick them when they are less than 2 inches in diameter. Fall-grown kohlrabi is not so touchy and can be left to grow slightly larger without becoming woody. Seed Specs-Approximately 300 seeds per gram. Minimum germination standard: 80%. Usual seed life: 3 years. Seed Saving Tips-Kohlrabi will cross with all other members of the B. oleracea species. Isolation of 1 mile is recommended.
