Growing Information - Eggplants
Sowing Indoors-Start seeds 6 weeks prior to your average last frost date. Transplant into a larger pot when the second set of leaves have emerged. Transplant out after all danger of frost has passed.
Sowing Outdoors-Not recommended. Growing Tips-Eggplants are heat-loving plants that require a warm growing season. Black plastic mulch and floating row covers will greatly improve growth in cooler climates. Fertilization Tips-Soil pH should be approximately 6.5. Apply 1/2 cup of a blended organic fertilizer around each plant to provide the nutrition necessary for optimum production. Disease Prevention Tips-Verticillium and fusarium wilts affect eggplants. Control these by using resistant varieties, rotating crops, and following general sanitation practices. Seed Specs-Approximately 200 seeds per gram. Minimum germination standard: 70%. Usual seed life: 2 years. Seed Saving Tips-Eggplants have perfect flowers and are self-pollinated. To prevent any odd insect contamination, isolate 50 feet between varieties.
