Growing Information - Corn
Sowing Indoors-Not recommended, but you may start indoors. Be sure to sow in a pot that will allow minimal root disturbance when the transplant is planted into the garden bed (i.e. cow pots).
Sowing Outdoors-Sow seeds when the soil temperature is at least 65°F, as corn does not like cold, wet soil. Corn is wind pollinated so plant in blocks of at least 4 rows for maximum yields. Growing Tips-Large-eared and double-eared varieties will not perform well if they are too crowded, and should be spaced 12 inches apart. Tillering (side shoot/sucker production) is usually caused by stress from under watering and/or over fertilization when the plants are young. Fertilization Tips-Corn tolerates a range of soil types and prefers a pH of 5.5-6.8. Apply 3-5 pounds of fish or seed meal per 100 row feet to significantly improve yields. Compost and manures are also excellent amendments for good corn production. Seed Specs-Approximately 110-250 seeds per ounce. Minimum germination standard: 80%. Usual seed life: 1 year. Seed Saving Tips-Corn is an out-crossing species that is wind pollinated, and will cross very easily with one another. To ensure purity isolate by 2 miles.
