Growing Information - Celery
Sowing Indoors-Start seeds from February-April. Make sure that the soil temperature is kept above 55°F and below 85°F. Transplant outside when the soil temperature reaches 65°F.
Sowing Outdoors-Not recommended. Growing Tips-Keep well watered, as the roots grow deeply but are small in diameter. The roots are adapted to draw large amounts of water from wet, boggy places. Bolting may be the result of young plants being exposed to temperatures below 55°F for a week or so. Fertilization Tips-Celery is one of the heaviest-feeding plants grown in the garden and loves soils high in organic matter. It requires a soil pH between 6.5-7.5. Apply 1 1/2-2 cups of a blended organic fertilizer into the soil around each plant to provide the nutrition necessary for optimum production. Harvesting Tips-Chopping off the entire head is not advisable. Instead, pick individual stalks as needed. Seed Specs-Approximately 2000 seeds per gram. Minimum germination standard: 65%. Usual seed life: 3 years. Seed Saving Tips-Celery and celeriac flowers are self-fertile but are largely cross-pollinated by insects. Isolation of 3,280 feet is required between different crops.
