Growing Information - Cauliflower
Sowing Indoors-Start seeds 6 weeks before your average last frost date. Transplant out at 6 weeks or when there are 6-8 true leaves and danger of hard frost has passed.
Sowing Outdoors-Sow from April-mid July. Growing Tips-Plant into humus-rich soil that has a pH of at least 6.5. Stress at any time prior to transplanting can cause premature bolting. Fertilization Tips-Apply 1/4-1/2 cup of a blended organic fertilizer into the soil around each plant to provide the nutrition necessary for optimum growth. If you are troubled with hollow stem, you might be fertilizing too heavily with nitrogen or have a boron deficiency in the soil. Blanching Tips-To obtain completely white heads, especially from spring-sown varieties, tie the inner leaves around the curd (head) when it starts to form. Seed Specs-Approximately 250-350 seeds per gram. Minimum germination standard: 75%. Usual seed life: 3 years. Seed Saving Tips-Cauliflower will cross with all other members of the B. oleracea species. Isolation of 1 mile is required.
