Growing Information - Carrots
Sowing Indoors-Not recommended.
Sowing Outdoors-Direct sow from March-mid July. Carrots may be slow and erratic to germinate and the soil needs to be kept moist. Growing Tips-Till or spade the bed deeply (12-16 inches) to allow roots to elongate and develop to their full size. Wait until the soil is dry enough to form a clodless growing medium when tilled. Fertilization Tips-The optimum soil pH is 6.5. Carrots require very little nitrogen so fertilize cautiously. Work in plenty of well-composted organic matter, preferably in the fall. Insect Prevention Tips-Carrot fly maggots can be controlled by covering the rows with insect barrier fabric at the time of planting. Seed Specs-Approximately 650-750 seeds per gram. Minimum germination standard: 75%. Usual seed life: 3 years. Seed Saving Tips-Carrots are outbreeders that are pollinated by insects. All carrots will cross with each other as well as with wild carrot and Queen Anne's Lace. Carrots need to be isolated by 1/2 mile from other carrot pollens.
