Growing Information - Cabbage
Sowing Indoors-Start seeds 6 weeks before your average last frost date. Transplant out at 6 weeks or when there are 6-8 true leaves and danger of hard frost has passed.
Sowing Outdoors-Direct sow early varieties March-June. Autumn-maturing varieties should be sown late May-early June. Growing Tips-Cabbage prefers a pH of 6.5 and 1-1 1/2 inches of water per week for uninterrupted growth. Fertilization Tips-Fertility requirements for cabbage are relatively high. Apply 1 1/2-2 cups of a blended organic fertilizer into the soil around each plant to provide the nutrition necessary for optimum production. Harvesting Tips-Early types mature fast and burst quickly, so they must be harvested promptly. Types that mature in late summer or autumn, when growth rates are slow, hold in the field relatively longer. Seed Specs-Approximately 110-230 seeds per gram. Minimum germination standard: 75%. Usual seed life: 3 years. Seed Saving Tips-Cabbage will cross with all other members of the B. oleracea species. Isolation of 1 mile is required.
