Growing Information - Beans
Sowing Indoors-Not recommended.
Sowing Outdoors-Direct sow in warm soils (+60°F) for uniform, rapid emergence. Do not soak seed prior to sowing. Beans are a favorite of birds so discourage them with flash tape or row crop covers. Growing Tips-For continuous bush bean harvest, plant beans 2-3 times, about 20 days apart. Trellis pole beans by stretching 2 wires between 2 wood posts. One wire 10 inches above ground, and the other 6-8 feet above. Using our Pea & Bean string, zigzag between wires creating a ''V'' shaped trellis. Fertilization Tips-Beans tolerate slightly acidic soil conditions. You can be successful with a pH of 5.4-6.5. Fertility requirements for beans are relatively modest. Apply 1 cup of a blended organic fertilizer per 10 row feet to provide the nutrition necessary for optimum production. Excess nitrogen causes poor pod set and delays maturity. Disease Prevention Tips-Careful watering that avoids wetting the foliage, along with complete removal of dead plants at the end of the season will help avoid disease. Seed Specs-Approximately 60-110 seeds per ounce, unless otherwise noted. Minimum germination standard: 80%. Usual seed life: 2-3 years. Seed Saving Tips-Flowers are self-pollinating, but are sometimes crossed by insects. A general rule of 30 feet of isolation should ensure purity; however, the extent of insect pollination is problematic. In areas that have many sources of pollen, growers claim little to no crossing. In other areas of scarce pollen sources, up to 25% crosses have been documented.
